Networking Activities

Luxinnovation Forum Business Meets Research

Luxinnovation organised the 4th edition of its annual Forum Business Meets Research  on 26 May 2011. With more than 350 participants from the Greater Region, this event has become a highlight to present the competencies and capabilities of public research in Luxembourg and to foster collaboration with companies. A strong emphasis was given in 2011 to networking activities with the concept of “Innovation Matchmaking” which successfully interested over 200 participants.

Business Meets Research is Cluster-driven and the content is focusing on the 5 thematic Clusters powered by Luxinnovation. Within this context, the Luxembourg Materials Cluster held a workshop on “Composite Materials for Industrial Applications”  with presentations from the University of Luxembourg and the Public Research Centres Henri Tudor and Gabriel Lippmann.

Production technologies of the future InterMAT 2011 – Rapid Manufacturing Conference

“Handling the challenge of cost pressure on the one hand and diversity and dynamics on the other becomes the central competence for production companies in high-wage countries”  assumes Dr. Wilhelm Meiners, Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technologies (ILT), Germany. Dr. Meiners was one of the keynote speakers during the Rapid Manufacturing Conference , which was organised by the Luxembourg Materials Cluster in close collaboration with the neighbouring Clusters Mecatech  (Wallonia) and Materalia  (France) on 1 February 2011 in Luxembourg with 40 participants.

Rapid Manufacturing – also known as Additive Manufacturing – is a new area of manufacturing deriving from Rapid Prototyping technologies that have already combined the effect of both improving products and reducing their development time. Rapid Manufacturing can be incredibly cost-effective and the process is far more flexible than conventional manufacturing, allowing small series production in quantities of up to several thousands. Applications of Rapid Manufacturing can be found across a wide range of industry sectors (e.g. automotive, aerospace, machinery). Due to its flexibility it contributes especially to individualised production (e.g. jewelry) and the manufacturing of customised implants.

The Rapid Manufacturing Conference was already the second conference (1st  conference in 2009 on NanoMaterials) organised within the context of InterMAT - a trans-border initiative  that has been set up by the Luxembourg Materials Cluster, Mecatech and Materalia in order to reinforce the Greater Region’s position and visibility in the field of Material Sciences.
